A guide to choosing a system, not just a box

Sets can be a very efficient way to bring together multiple sizes, cables or tools, but not every set serves the same need.

This page is designed to help you understand what each type of set includes and when it makes sense to invest in one.

Want to cover several sizes at once?

A set makes sense when you want to build a system, expand your options or keep several tools organized.

A set is not always the best first purchase

If you are still discovering which material, tip length or feel you prefer, it may be better to try an individual tool first. If you knit or crochet regularly, a set can be a very efficient way to build your collection.

Before choosing a set, look at four things

Sizes Which needle or hook sizes it actually includes.
Format Interchangeables, crochet hooks, DPNs or another tool family.
Compatibility Which cables and components it accepts.
Actual use How many of those sizes you will really use.

Quick guide to choosing a set

The question is not “which one includes more?”, but “what will I actually use?”.

Large set vs. small set

A large set gives you more sizes from the start. A smaller set reduces the initial investment and may be enough if you usually work within a specific size range.

Compatibility matters

With interchangeable systems, always check which cables and tips can be combined. There is no universal compatibility across brands, or even across every system within the same brand.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy a set or individual needles/hooks?

If you regularly use many sizes, a set can be convenient. If you are still discovering your preferences, trying individual tools may make more sense.

Do all sets include cables?

No. The contents depend on the model. Always check exactly which pieces are included.

Can I expand a set later?

With modular systems, usually yes, as long as you follow the manufacturer's compatibility guidelines.

Is the largest set necessarily better?

No. A set is better when its sizes, format and system match what you actually use.

A good set is not the one with the most pieces. It is the one you will use.

The best purchase is the one that supports your real projects and lets you grow within a coherent system.
